Una donna di fuora
In Sicilian folklore, the donne di fuora or ‘women of the outside’ were said to be cunning, magical herbalists + matriarchs who communed in the forest by moonlight. They imbued their villages + broader communities with reverence for the natural world + its wisdom.
As a student of sustainable agriculture and landscape architecture, designer Gabrielle Ragusa envisions creative solutions to ecosystem degradation + social inequity to help root her in this ancestral tradition.
Gabrielle seeks to utilize skills acquired via formal education, interdisciplinary experience + curiosity-driven experimentation to enhance environments for the benefit of all. She finds inspiration in food, sacred geometry, travel, topography, + the behavior of all manner of species. Her design palette includes a diversity of edible + ornamental plant material, strategies for a circular economy + cultural context.
